The first two weeks of the 2024 season have provided mixed fortunes for Meersbrook Park BC.

Building on the growth of the cub in 2023, we now have teams playing in 4 competitive leagues – namely Sheffield Social Clubs, Sheffield and Hallamshire, Sheffield Parks and Sheffield Works.

Our season got off to a good start. We had no fools on 1st April, with a convincing win against High Hazels in the Social League. The match consists of 4 games of singles and 2 games of doubles so the team is 8 players in all. There is 1 point scored for a win in each game and a further 2 points for the team who has the highest total score on the aggregate (when all the points scored in all the games are added together) – so 8 points are available in the match.

Meersbrook Park BC took a magnificent 7 points to win the match 7-1, including a win in the doubles where Tom R made his league debut.

The following Monday, the tables were turned as Meersbrook Park BC lost 1-7 at Bradway. This time the doubles pairs struggled on the away green and Alex and Andy were both unlucky to lose their singles games 20 – 21.

Our team in the Sheffield and Hallamshire League has yet to claim a victory this season, having lost 2 -8 at home to Thorncliffe and 3 -7, again away at Bradway. The match here is 8 games of singles, with 1 point for a win and 2 points for the highest aggregate score – so 10 points available in the match. Particular credit must go to Terry and Steve, who won their games at Bradway in arctic conditions, the green being white over after the hail!

Hail Terry

In Sheffield Parks League on April 17th, a match of 8 singles, the Wednesday Vets (over 60’s) team lost 2-8 at Nether Edge, again in hail. Nonetheless, it was a sterling performance as the 3 players for whom this was their first ever league game all totted up double figures. The crown belongs to Linda , who played her first league game of singles and won convincingly 21-14.

Sheffield Works League fixtures start on 3rd May. We played a knock out game of 6 singles on Friday 19th when teenager Jack performed extremely well on his first outing. We anticipated a battle, having been drawn against a side in the higher division. and lost out to Woodhouse West End.

We hope for good results next week , when the Wednesday Vets are playing on our green on 24th at 1:30 pm and would appreciate any support (!), while the Sheffield and Hallamshire team are away at Fulwood on Tuesday.
