Fine weather, lovely venues and friendly opposition, yet for MPBC ‘s league players, May so
far has not been a wholly merrie month.
Spring may have sprung, but we have not managed to bounce away from bottom position of
Sheffield and Hallamshire Division D nor Sheffield Works Division 2.
On 26 th April, in the Doubles Knockout Competition of Sheffield Works Leage. MPBC had a
great win of 62 to 43 (total points scored only counting in this match) against Hallam Grange
on their green. In the leagues however, we could not repeat that success.
We travelled to Hallam Grange twice in the same week – on Tuesday 7 th and Friday 10 th
May – and had our noses put out of joint on what proved to be a bogey green. On both
evenings we failed to win a single game despite valiant effort. The Tuesday evening was
balmy in more ways than one, when our first player mistook a teammates bowls for his own
and played a game with them, not noticing that they were 2 weights higher than he was
accustomed to! The games were then played out of order as the teammate had to wait to get
his own bowls back before he could go onto the green! Nonetheless, those 2 players were
among our highest scorers on the night, losing to 18 and 19 points. On Friday, Jack scored
a very creditable 15 points against a strong opponent, but again we ended the night beaten
10 points to nil.
This Tuesday 14th , we hosted Cortonwood on our green. They are a new team to the
Sheffield and Hallamshire League but in recognition of the strength of their players, they
have been entered into Division D rather than in the lowest group. Their team included Mike
Baxter, a former stalwart of MPBC, who is as familiar with our green as we are ! Rodney
bowled some excellent woods but still only managed to score 9 against him. Our resilient
gents Mick L and Butch saved our pride somewhat but they were our only winners.
After 6 games, we’re in the relegation zone in Sheffield and Hallamshire D and 12 points
astray of our nearest rivals- Bradway B.
